India VIX today
India VIX, the NSE volatility index, at the last close: its change on the day, the 52-week high and low, a one-year chart and what the level means. Updated every trading evening.
What India VIX means
India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It is worked out from NIFTY option prices and shows how much movement the options market is pricing in over the next 30 days, as an annual percentage. Dividing it by √365 gives a rough daily figure: a VIX of 15 means NIFTY options price in about ±0.8% a day. A rising VIX means options have become more expensive; it describes expected movement, not its direction. Read more in India VIX explained and implied volatility.

Neither: it measures how much movement NIFTY option prices expect, not which way. A high VIX means options are pricing in bigger moves and cost more; a low VIX means smaller expected moves.
It changes with market conditions. Comparing today's value with its own 52-week range, as on this page, shows whether it is high or low for the past year.
NSE calculates it from the order book of NIFTY options of the near and next expiries, using the same method as the CBOE VIX. It is expressed as an annualised percentage.
