What the F&O ban means

Each F&O stock has a market-wide position limit (MWPL): the most open interest allowed across all traders. When open interest in a stock's futures and options goes above 95% of its MWPL, the stock enters the ban period. During the ban, traders can only reduce or close their F&O positions in that stock; fresh positions that increase open interest attract a penalty. The stock leaves the ban once open interest falls below 80% of MWPL.

The ban applies only to that stock's futures and options. Buying and selling the shares in the cash market continues normally. Index derivatives such as NIFTY and BANKNIFTY are not part of this list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the F&O ban list?

It is the list of stocks whose futures and options open interest has crossed 95% of the market-wide position limit (MWPL). NSE publishes it every evening for the next trading session.

Can I trade a stock that is in the F&O ban?

You can still buy and sell its shares in the cash market. In its futures and options you can only reduce or close existing positions; new positions that increase open interest are penalised.

When does a stock come out of the F&O ban?

A stock leaves the ban period when its total open interest falls below 80% of the market-wide position limit, as checked by the exchange at the end of a trading day.

Are NIFTY and BANKNIFTY ever in the F&O ban?

No. The ban period applies to individual stocks in the F&O segment, not to index derivatives.
